One of the questions I am often asked is about night time nappy ideas.  Once that baby is asleep the last thing you want is them to wake because of a wet nappy - or worse wet clothes and bedding.

There are a few brands that manufacture dedicated night nappies and if none of my ideas below help then you should probably start looking at some of these.  We stock the Baby Beehinds Night Nappies and these are great as they are already fleece lined to keep your baby feeling dry and amazingly with 23 layers of bamboo fleece they are still one of the trimmer night nappy options!

For successful night nappying you need to have enough absorbent fabric in the nappy.  This may require adding additional boosters.  Although I love microfibre for it’s quick absorption and high absorbency I don’t recommend using it on its own at night.  Microfibre absorbs like a sponge and in the same way as you push on a sponge and liquid comes back out, the same occurs with microfibre.  If you are going to use microfibre in your night nappy it should be closest to your babies skin (without touching the skin) or enclosed within hemp or bamboo.  Hemp and Bamboo hold onto liquid better and are less likely to cause leaks because of pressure points.

Our own night nappy solution includes a Baby Beehinds Bamboo One-size with a night fleece liner and combined with a wool cover.  We would include a bamboo booster on the outside of the nappy in heavy wetting periods - ie when it is hot and they are drinking more.  Put on the nappy and simply fold up the booster and lay it through the crotch over the top of the nappy, this means you put the absorbency where it is required without affecting the fit of the nappy.

Your night time nappy is only going to be as good as the cover you put over the top and I can’t stress it enough - I Love Wool.  It does take a little more work to look after than a PUL cover but I think the benefits are worth the extra work. I’ll save the benefits of wool for my next blog post but in summary wool is naturally anti-bacterial, naturally water-repellent and naturally regulates body temperature (ie warm in winter and cool in summer).

My recommendation for a night nappy cover is the Loveybums Wool Interlock covers with 2 layers of their soft and stretchy interlock.
